University of Wah (UW) has taken a significant step toward community welfare and healthcare collaboration by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Pakistan Thalassemia Welfare Society (Regd.) and Blood Donation Foundation, Rawalpindi, on 27 February 2025. The MoU aims to foster long-term cooperation in key areas, including the following:
> Raising awareness about thalassemia and its prevention
> Organizing blood donation camps and campaigns
> Providing access to blood for the UW community and free screening for donors
> Establishing a framework for education, awareness, and support for thalassemia patients
Brig (Retd.). Haroon Abbas Khan, Registrar, UW, and Maj. Gen. Parvez Ahmed. HI (M). (Retd.), CEO of Pakistan Thalassemia Welfare Society and Blood Donation Foundation, Rawalpindi, signed the MoU on behalf of their institutions. Speaking on the occasion, Brig (Retd.). Haroon Abbas Khan reaffirmed UW’s commitment to social responsibility and public health initiatives. He emphasized that this collaboration will foster joint efforts in awareness campaigns, blood donation drives, and research-based initiatives aimed at preventing and treating thalassemia and other blood-related diseases. He also highlighted the university’s previous successful blood donation camps in collaboration with other organizations.
Maj. Gen. Parvez Ahmed. HI (M) (Retd.), CEO of the Pakistan Thalassemia Welfare Society, expressed gratitude for the recognition and shared the foundation’s mission of providing affordable blood cancer treatment, blood bank services, and screening facilities. He highlighted opportunities for UW students, with Biosciences students benefiting from internships and research projects while Psychology students engage in social initiatives and socioeconomic studies. He acknowledged UW Psychology students' past contributions, emphasizing the University’s commitment to community-focused partnerships.
Prof. Dr. Amjad Hassan, Director ORIC; Dr. Shaukat Ali, Director QA&E; Ms. Sarah Khan, Acting Director Media; and Dr. Bilal Ahmad, Director Student Affairs also attended the MoU signing ceremony. This MoU marks a significant milestone in addressing health challenges and promoting community service.
