UW FM Radio 101.8 featured Dr. Maryum Bashir, a Pakistani-American environmental expert, in a special episode of its guest podcast series on 17 July 2025. Station Manager Mr. Umar Hayat Khan hosted the session. Dr. Maryum, who holds a PhD in Climate Change from the University of Vermont, shared valuable insights into Pakistan’s growing climate challenges, including intensified monsoons, widespread flooding, and rising temperatures.
She cited recent climate-related fatalities in Punjab, emphasizing the urgent need for improved early warning systems, effective disaster response, and investment in climate-resilient infrastructure. Despite contributing less than 1% to global carbon emissions, Pakistan remains highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, a reality Dr. Maryum described as a stark example of climate injustice. She called on wealthier nations to extend support through climate finance, technology transfer, and equitable global policies.
Dr. Maryum also stressed the importance of sustainable urban planning, resilient agriculture, and active youth participation in climate action. Concluding on a hopeful note, she praised ongoing local initiatives such as tree plantations and solar projects as promising signs of a greener, more sustainable future for Pakistan.
